Freewater by Amina Luqman-Dawson
Freewater

Freewater follows 12‑year‑old Homer and his younger sister Ada as they escape the brutal Southerland plantation and flee into the Great Dismal Swamp, where they discover Freewater, a hidden community founded by people who escaped enslavement. There, the siblings find safety, friendship, and a glimpse of true freedom, but Homer remains determined to rescue their mother, who was captured during their escape. Blending adventure with history, the novel highlights resilience, courage, and the power of community.

Non-Fiction Spotlight:
Poetry for Young People:  Langston Hughes

Poetry for young people: Langston Hughes

This book is a beautifully illustrated collection of poems by the influential African American poet Langston Hughes, selected and edited by David Roessel and Arnold Rampersad. The book brings together some of Hughes’s most powerful and accessible poems—such as “The Negro Speaks of Rivers,” “Mother to Son,” “My People,” and “I, Too”—and pairs them with expressive artwork that helps young readers connect with the themes. The collection highlights Hughes’s focus on everyday language, African American identity, social justice, music-inspired rhythms, and the beauty and strength of Black communities. Designed especially for young readers, it introduces them to Hughes’s voice, the Harlem Renaissance, and the importance of dreams, resilience, and cultural pride.

Mr. Vinci with Library Staff
Melanie Stark

Thank you, Mr. Anthony Vinci for visiting our school on Friday!

The West Chatham Middle School Library Media Center was excited to welcome Anthony Vinci for a recent author visit on Friday, February 6. During his visit, Mr. Vinci spoke with students about military intelligence and artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on how AI is affecting today’s military intelligence and the world around us.

Mr. Vinci is the author of The Fourth Intelligence Revolution: The Future of Espionage and the Battle to Save America, and his discussion connected real‑world issues to topics students are learning about in school.

We are grateful to Mr. Vinci for visiting West Chatham Middle School and sharing his knowledge with our students.
